What Do Heralds Do?
Heralds coordinate verbal announcements at events during the day
and at court. They also help people research and
submit medieval names and devices (heraldic designs). For larger
groups, Heralds may also maintain the group "Order of
Precedence," which is a list of awards that members have
received. |

Why Awards Exist
[The following is
condensed from
Herzog
Thoman Shadan Secarius' article "Why Awards Exist"]
One of the best things about the Society
for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is the opportunity it
presents to learn about medieval arts & sciences, fighting,
archery, etc. Here you'll find people who have a greater or
lesser degree of skill and/or knowledge about these activities.
Some people are more involved in making things "happen"; that
is, they spend time and energy working to make the Society a
more fun and functional place.
On a one-to-one basis you may have respect for these people,
their work, skills or knowledge. Respect for one another is the
root of chivalrous behavior, and therefore a major component of
the SCA. Like most clubs and organizations, there is a formal
recognition process that exists in the SCA: Awards.
Awards are given by the Royalty and the seated Baronage, to
recognize the achievements and contributions made by individuals
in the Kingdom and in the Baronies. They're not meant to
substitute for individual respect, but rather to show respect on
the Kingdom or Baronial level, and to hold the individual up as
an ideal.
The decision on who deserves what awards is based on
recommendations submitted by the general populace. Usually, the
Crown and the Baronage will consult with others as to the
accuracy and appropriateness of the recommendation. Some awards
confer membership in an Order. The Kingdom level Orders
are polled by the Crown to learn the consensus regarding the
recommendation. But anyone can send in an award recommendation
for anyone for any award or Order membership, and the King and
Queen or the Baronage will consider it. |
How to
Recommend Someone for Baronial or Kingdom Level Awards
If you're not sure what awards there are,
click this link and scroll down to see descriptions of the
Windmasters' Hill baronial level awards. Links to Kingdom
and Society level awards appear on the same page in the left
hand column.
If you're not sure what awards each person has, you can look it
up on the Atlantian Order of Precedence.
