If you are new to
the Society for Creative
Anachronism, welcome! We hope you'll consider joining us!
There's a lot of information below, but the best way to get a
sense of what the SCA is all about is to try it for yourself.
Please note that we have a special office, the Chatelaine (aka
Hospitaller, Castellan, or Gold Key) for helping newcomers get
oriented. Feel free to contact our one of our local Chatelaines
listed below. |

Finding your local group
If you're not based in Windmasters’ Hill,
here is a link to help you find
your local group.
Listing of Atlantian Chatelaines
And here is a list of local Chatelaines in the
Kingdom of Atlantia (MD, DC, VA,
NC & SC). |
Loaner Garb & Feastgear for SCA Events
Unlike Renaissance faires, SCA events are not performances or
displays to entertain the general public. Events are where we hope
to immerse ourselves in the period. Everyone attending an SCA event
is expected to dress the part.
If you're needing loaner
garb or
feastgear
(tableware/eating utensils) for and SCA event, or if you're bringing
someone who will need loaner gear, we ask that you contact your local
Chatelaine (person in charge of assisting
newcomers) at least a week or two in advance. There may
be a limited supply of loaner garb available at the event, but it's
best to make arrangements in advance rather than take a chance. And
that way you’re more likely to find an outfit that fits comfortably and
looks good on you.
Remember that the chatelaines may have other event preparations to make as
well, and being asked to find garb and feastgear for ten people a few days
before the event when you have projects to finish can be stressful. In any
case, they'll be happy to help as best they can.
It's helpful if you let them know if the person needing the garb is male or
female, their height and weight, their approximate hip, waist and chest
measurement (dress size if it's a lady), and their general colour
preferences. You can even ask the chatelaine about making arrangements to
visit them in advance to try things on. If schedules permit, this is the
best way to make sure that the person ends up with an outfit that suits
them. |
Newcomer Resource Library
[added 07/22/08]
Lady Rose is building a resource library for newcomers (and old comers as
well). She recently received some old Tournaments Illuminated (an SCA
magazine) (thanks, Alejandro!) and has enjoyed them immensely. She
would like to be able to share the wealth. If anyone has books, magazines,
articles, or any other newcomer library-type stuff that you would be willing
to donate, please let her know! (A list of available titles will be
posted soon.] |
